What Is YouTube Watch Time?

The watch time on YouTube refers to the total amount of time people spend watching your videos. It’s a new metric that YouTube launched in 2018 and it’s a more accurate way to measure audience engagement than views.

With this new metric, you can understand which videos are resonating with your audience and what kind of content they prefer to watch. You can also see if viewers are engaging with multiple parts of a video or just one specific section. How YouTube Analytics Tracks Watch Time

YouTube Analytics tracks watch time by recording the total amount of time a video is watched. This includes both actual viewing and buffering, as well as skippable ads that appear before or during your video.

Average View Duration: This metric tells you how long users are spending watching your videos on average. It’s calculated by dividing a video’s total watch time by its number of views during a set period (e.g., 7-day, 28-day).

Returning Audience: Returning audience metrics show how many people have watched at least two consecutive videos from your channel within a given time frame (e.g., last week). These are important because they indicate repeat engagement with your brand or channel, which can lead to greater loyalty and conversions over time.
